“Equality means that everyone is treated fairly and given the same opportunities, rights, and respect, regardless of their gender, race, age, or background.”
Redefining Masculinity: The Real Men Campaign by MAGE-SL
The Men’s Association for Gender Equality – Sierra Leone (MAGE-SL) continues to challenge harmful gender stereotypes through its ongoing Real Men Campaign, an initiative that redefines what it truly means to be a man in today’s society.
Rooted in MAGE-SL’s commitment to gender equality, transformative masculinity, and inclusive development, the campaign highlights men who are modelling positive behaviours in their personal and professional lives. By promoting empathy, respect, and shared responsibility, the Real Men Campaign seeks to inspire change within homes, communities, and institutions across Sierra Leone.
“Being a Real Man Means Participating Fully in Domestic Work”
Alhassan, MAGE-SL’s Finance Officer, is one of the voices championing this transformation. In his message, he emphasised that real men challenge outdated gender norms and recognise that gender justice begins at home.
For generations, domestic responsibilities have been unfairly placed on women, limiting men’s participation in family life. Alhassan’s statement reflects MAGE-SL’s broader mission to dismantle such stereotypes. When men share household duties, they not only show respect for their partners but also teach the next generation that equality is a daily practice.
“True strength lies in supporting one’s partner and family,” says Alhassan.
“By participating in domestic work, men contribute to stronger, more respectful relationships and communities.”
“Real Men Treat Others with Compassion and Care”
Emmanuel, Assistant Finance Officer at MAGE-SL, offers another powerful perspective on masculinity and women’s empowerment. He believes that strength is measured not by dominance, but by empathy and respect.
“True strength comes from mutual respect, not force,” Emmanuel explains.
“Real men never impose their will on women. It’s time to redefine masculinity by valuing consent, dignity, and equality.”
Emmanuel’s message reinforces MAGE-SL’s belief that gender equality is not only a women’s issue—it is a shared responsibility. His call to action reminds all men to contribute to a world where every woman’s voice is heard and respected.
“True Masculinity Is About Empathy, Kindness, and Respect”
Madieu Conteh, a dedicated Project Officer and long-time advocate for gender justice, underscores that masculinity should be defined by compassion rather than control.
“True masculinity is not about toughness,” Madieu notes.
“It’s about qualities like empathy, kindness, and respect. Being a real man means treating people with care—these are the values that define true strength and character.”
Through his fieldwork and community engagement, Madieu continues to promote positive male role models and encourage dialogue among men and boys about healthy, non-violent expressions of manhood.
A Movement for Equality and Respect
The Real Men Campaign is part of MAGE-SL’s broader efforts to promote transformative masculinity—a concept that encourages men to reflect on their social roles, challenge power imbalances, and actively participate in building equitable relationships.
By elevating voices like Alhassan’s, Emmanuel’s, and Madieu’s, MAGE-SL demonstrates that gender equality is achievable when men and women work together as partners for change.
Join the Movement
MAGE-SL invites men, women, and institutions across Sierra Leone to take part in redefining masculinity and advancing gender justice. Real strength is found in respect, compassion, and equality.
Together, we can create a society where every person—regardless of gender—can thrive in dignity and peace.
